Subang Develops Koropedang to Replace Soy Bean

TEMPO Interactive, Subang:The Subang Office of Agriculture in West Java is continuing its program to develop the koro pedang bean. The plant is expected to replace soy beans as the main ingredient in tofu or bean curd production. “We are collaborating with the Bogor Institute of Agriculture’s (IPB) Post-Harvest Research Center, specifically to study the karopedang beans,” said Agus Taruna, Subang Agriculture Office chief, yesterday.

The research results showed that koro pedang beans are not yet recommended for consumption as it contains high cyanide acid. However, it is safe for the production of animal feed. “We developed this plant in a 1.000-hectare plantation sites,” Agus said.

The bean can be harvested after 45 days and can be competitively priced at Rp 4.000 per kilogram
